Behind the Scenes with Robert Andrea: A Creative Space Full of Life and Inspiration

Self-taught artist Robert Andrea has been painting and drawing since before he could ride a bike. After serving 32 years in law enforcement and 20 years in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, Bob retired to focus full-time on his passion for painting. His artwork explores the relationships between sportsmen, nature, and wildlife, often incorporating humor and elements of nostalgia. Over the years, Bob has earned recognition for his work, including winning the Oregon Waterfowl Stamp Competition and Wisconsin Turkey Stamp Competition. His paintings have been licensed for various products, from puzzles and greeting cards to calendars and home décor. Now living in northwest Wisconsin with his wife, Bob continues to draw inspiration from the beauty around him, creating art that brings smiles and sparks cherished memories.

We caught up with Robert (Bob) Andrea recently to see what he's currently working on, where he likes to create, and what inspires him!

Q: Bob, can you tell us about your workspace and what makes it special to you?

Bob Andrea: "To look at my workspace you may think it is nothing special, and yet it is the most special room in our house. Originally, we added this room to be an art studio. However, over time, I found that I don’t like to be isolated. In order for me to paint, I also need to be engaged. So, we added a pellet stove, a few recliners, and a TV, and this room came alive. Whether it’s just me alone, my wife knitting, or grandkids coloring, it is the busiest room in the house! Natural light streams in from each side, making this workspace all I need. It is where you will find me most days and evenings."

Q: You also have a second studio space. What do you use that for?

Bob Andrea: "In addition to this lively space, I have another studio in the basement where I do my airbrushing. I work back and forth with brushes and airbrush. It is equipped with a vented hood to make sure the rest of the house stays clear and clean."

Q: What are you currently working on?

Bob Andrea: "Currently, I am finishing up the last book in a series of children’s books that I have been illustrating, and this is what is on the easel. As much as I enjoy the challenge of illustrating someone else's ideas, what drives and inspires me is the love of painting."

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your art?

Bob Andrea: "I get ideas wherever I am—outside walking, being on the lake or driving, getting pictures. We live in an area where I am surrounded by God’s beautiful nature, and it is all inspiring. I may see a deer and immediately have an idea of how I can use it in a painting; my mind is always creating."

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your future work?

Bob Andrea: "I am looking forward to getting back to some wildlife/scenery paintings; it is where I feel most at home with my work!"

Bob’s workspace is more than just a place to create—it is a reflection of his artistic spirit, a place where inspiration and togetherness intertwine. In this room filled with warmth, light, and the people he cherishes, his art continues to flourish, driven by the beauty of the natural world and the joy of shared creativity.
